Short of appropriate limits, raising young people would become a dangerous “all-join” as Nigerians would say; A situation where everything is allowed, to any extent desired by the parts involved, for any reason, anywhere, and at any time. But this is not how life works.
When injustice becomes normalized, denial of rights becomes normative as well. Then honouring the people’s due rights becomes a kind of privilege or favour. Gender-based injustice, one of the oldest forms of discrimination, has had serious impacts on the wider society. We need to respond to it as a matter of urgency and with a lot of reasonableness and wit as it touches on people’s cultures.
Car-Free Days are days when people do not drive private vehicles to allow cities to be free of congestion and noise and to give people a chance to walk and cycle freely. It is an incentive to cut down emissions which negatively impact health and disrupt ecosystems and the biodiversity of the planet Earth. Rwanda is an examplary country in Africa in this regard.
The message to our artists is that we are entertained by their acting, singing, dancing, choreography, jokes, and others, but we are conscious of the ethics and values of our society. There is no point entertaining people with what they do not like or accept.
As citizens who look forward to a better society in the future, we need to stand against any forms of discrimination, abuse, exploitation or infringement of the rights of women.
Journalists, whether for audiovisuals, print media, or modern web-based platforms, need to have the basic and most important qualities of the practice, that is, being observant, analytical, with integrity, and reliably aware of the needs of the public.
Children should be taught that being disabled is not something to use against people and make them feel ashamed, less valued, or of no substantial contribution.
The children who this year 2023 are learning under trees are technically expected to globally compete with their peers in the job market in 18 years. Are we expecting them to run at the same pace as other children in the country and the world at large while they are left behind in all aspects of learning?
The fact that there are incidences of mob justice communicates to us one of the following two things. First, it is either people do not know the law, or they do not know how to get help from the law, or second, the law enforcement agencies have disappointed people from time to time, and people have lost trust in the effectiveness of what they do.
While violence is not a new thing anywhere in the world, the cases we hear about frequently were on the low for some good time. The biggest problem which I believe should be prioritised ikn seeking to addres this is the general use of physical force, brutality, and cruel behaviour of improvising household tools as weapons.
